Reflexology
Reflexology is a therapy in which pressure is applied to the reflex lints on the hands and feet. It is based on the principle that these reflex points are related to the internal organs and glands, and are laid out in the same arrangement as that in the physical body, forming a "map", or microcosm of it. Pressure/palpation on a reflex point can therefore affect these structures. This treatment helps to stimulate the normal function of the organ involved and thus aids self-healing, bringing about physical and mental well-being.
Reflexology causes a relaxation response throughout the many body systems that bring circulation back to normal and allows oxygen and nutrients to flow to the cells. As equilibrium is restored, healing can take place. Reflexology is proven to produce therapeutic benefits for a wide range of health conditions.
Reflexology has a history of over 4000 years, and is used to facilitate natural healing, ease pain, reduce stress and tension, or just for pleasurable relaxation.
How does it work?
There are thousands of nerve endings in the feet and hands. The feet are the highest concentration of nerve endings within the body. Reflexes are involuntary responses to a stimulus carried by the nerves from one location to the next.
From a scientific standpoint we are affecting the body through the nervous system. Creating a relaxation effect throughout the parasympathetic nervous system on a systemic level.
From an eastern philosophy we are affecting the Qi and movement of energy (life force) within the body. The placement of the reflexes mirror the placement of the organs.
Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that reflexology has benefits in palliative care of people with cancer.
Heath Benefits
* Assists with depression, anxiety, rebalance of hormones, produces melatonin, helps regulate the nervous system, metabolizing food, circulation, stress, anger - just to name a few.
